Friday morning, at 11.00 at the office of the House of Europe in Rhodes, in the Medieval City, the Administrative Board of the House hosted the 25 winners of the Written Competition EUROSCOLA, their professors and a few parents.
The President of the House Mrs. Anna Charitou has welcome and congratulated the pupils on their success to be selected, among 145 participants and explained to them the procedure to be followed thereafter. The pupils were also addressed by both the Director of the Second Degree of Education Office of the Dodecanese, Mr. Minas Nicolaou and the Professor of Informatics, Mr Michael Kyriakakis, who has coordinated the whole undertaking for the Education Office and who, together with the professors Mrs. Gola and Mrs. L. Philippaki, will escort the pupils in their trip to Strasbourg.
At noon the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs Mr. Yannis Valinakis arrived, in order to meet the pupils and discuss with them. After he congratulated them, their professors and their parents, on their success, he stayed with them for about 90 min. explaining briefly the function of the European Parliament and the way a European Deputy acts in order to promote his proposal which the members of the Parliament will be asked to support, responding to the interest of his own country but also acting in favor of the general interest of the E.U.
After Mr. Valinakis departed, Mrs. Charitou handed to the pupils the special dossier with informative material, helpful to their preparation, for their participation in the Sessions at the Youth European Parliament in Strasbourg, together with pupils from altogether 20 countries, members of the E.U.
Mr. M. Kyriakakis, has registered the preferences of the pupils and divided them into the following 6 Working Committees: 1) Democracy and Citizenship 2) Environment, Transport and Energy 3) Reinforcement of Europe 4) 2009: European Year of Creativity 5) Occupation and Social Policy 6) Τhe future of Europe. They have also elected a leader for each Committee.
The necessary instructions were given for the day of departure: Wednesday 25 February 2009.
Organizers and pupils have promised to convey their impressions to their schoolmates and to the public of Rhodes at their return from Strasbourg, during a follow-up meeting which will be organized on this purpose.
